Hotel direct bookings start with free links
A hotel that sells most of its rooms through online travel agencies pays commission on each of those stays. Google shows hotel rates from Hotel Center partners as free booking links, charges nothing for the clicks and ranks them without regard to who advertises. Getting the hotel’s own rate into those links, and tagging the clicks so the booking engine can count them, costs no media. After that, each paid option has to beat the same figure. Performance Max for travel goals, hotel ads on Google and travel ads on Meta are worth running only while a direct booking they bring in costs less than the commission and fees the hotel would otherwise pay. For guests in the European Economic Area, Google’s hotel results also include a supplier unit for direct providers, next to the units filled by travel agencies and metasearch sites.
Executive findings
- 1
Google shows free booking links next to hotel ads in its hotel booking module. Partners pay no fee for them, bids have no effect on their ranking, and Google ranks them on signals that include consumer preference, value to the user, landing page experience and the partner’s record of price accuracy.

Clicks from free booking links do not show up in Google Ads and do not use its tracking template. Hotel Center partners can separate them from ad clicks with the CAMPAIGN-ID or IF-AD-CLICK landing page parameters.

Performance Max for travel goals builds an asset group for each property and serves across Google channels including Search, YouTube, Maps and the Travel channel. Linking a Hotel Center account to it is currently limited to accounts with no more than 100 hotels; larger accounts use the API.

For users in the European Economic Area, hotel searches can show an aggregator unit filled by approved travel aggregators and, next to it, a supplier unit for direct providers such as individual hotels. The supplier unit appears only when the aggregator unit does.

In our illustrative model, a 300 booking at 15% commission, less a 3% cost of taking it direct, sets a break-even of 36 per paid direct booking, so 2,000 a month in media has to bring 56 bookings that would otherwise have gone through an agency.

Method and limitations
- Question
- Should an independent hotel spend its next direct-booking budget on Google hotel formats, Meta travel ads, or neither until its free booking links work?
- Written for
- Owners, revenue managers and marketing leads at independent hotels and small hotel groups that take a large share of bookings through online travel agencies.
- Decision at stake
- What to set up before paying for media, and the cost per direct booking at which a paid channel stops paying for itself.
- Sources
- Google Hotel Center Help on free booking links and click tracking, Google Ads Help on Performance Max for travel goals, Google Search Central on the aggregator and supplier units in the European Economic Area, and Meta Business Help Center pages on hotel catalogs and travel ads.
- Period
- Official pages as published on 27 October 2026.
- Markets
- The markets we serve where Google and Meta ads run. The aggregator and supplier units apply to users in the European Economic Area only. In mainland China, where Google and Meta ads do not serve users, the paid sections do not apply.
- Definitions
- Direct booking: a reservation made on the hotel’s own website or booking engine, with no agency commission.
- Free booking link: an unpaid rate listing in Google’s hotel booking module, ranked separately from hotel ads.
- Break-even cost per direct booking: the commission saved on a booking minus the extra cost of taking it direct.
- Incremental direct booking: a direct booking that would otherwise have gone through an agency.
- Limitations
- We publish no commission rates, click costs or conversion rates for hotels. Agency contracts differ by hotel and market, so use your own.
- Google says it tests where free booking links sit relative to paid links, so their position on the page can change.
- Rules on rate parity clauses and price display differ by country and are outside this piece.
Free booking links cost nothing per click
Documented: official source
Google’s hotel booking module shows two kinds of rate links. Hotel ads are ranked in an auction. Free booking links are ranked on consumer preference, the value offered, the landing page experience and the partner’s record of price accuracy. Google takes no payment for free booking links, and a hotel’s bids or ad spend have no effect on where its free link appears.
A hotel already in Hotel Center with a bid in a hotel campaign, available rates and a landing page is eligible automatically. Hotels without a Hotel Center account can start from Google’s starter guide. Booking engines and channel managers can act as Google connectivity partners, so the hotel’s own provider may be able to switch the links on.
Count the free clicks separately
Documented: official source
Free booking link clicks never reach the Google Ads account, so its reports leave out part of what Google sends to the booking engine. Hotel Center has its own reports for free link performance. The CAMPAIGN-ID or IF-AD-CLICK landing page parameters mark each click as paid or free, which lets the booking engine and analytics split bookings by source. Google also recommends the VERIFICATION parameter so that its own test clicks can be excluded.
Paid hotel formats on Google and Meta
Documented: official source
Performance Max for travel goals builds one asset group per property. When rates are available it can show the same price-led formats as hotel campaigns, alongside placements on Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Property lists can be created in Google Ads or linked from Hotel Center; the Hotel Center link currently works only for accounts with no more than 100 hotels.
On Meta, hotel ads are a type of Advantage+ catalog ad. They need a hotel catalog, which can be built from an existing Google Hotel List Feed, and a Meta Pixel or SDK connected to it. Travel ads for prospecting can optimise for the Search, ViewContent, InitiateCheckout or Purchase events, so a booking engine that does not send Purchase to Meta limits the campaign to earlier steps.
A separate route for direct providers in the EEA
Documented: official source
For users in the European Economic Area, Google can show an aggregator unit on hotel searches, filled by approved online travel agencies, metasearch sites and directories, with a supplier unit for direct providers such as individual hotels next to it. The supplier unit appears only when the aggregator unit does. A hotel qualifies if it is a direct provider and its website serves users in the EEA.
Our order of work
FOCUSADS view
Put the hotel’s own rate into free booking links and tag the clicks before buying any media. Then set a break-even cost per direct booking from the agency contracts and test one paid channel against it.
Without the split between free and paid clicks, a rise in direct bookings after a hotel ads launch may come from the free links, and the paid campaign gets the credit. A hotel with steady searches for its own name will also see paid bookings from guests who were going to book direct anyway. Those save no commission, so compare against a holdout region or period before crediting the campaign.
Worked model: the break-even cost per booking
Illustrative model, not a benchmark
One hotel compares the commission on an agency booking with the media cost of winning the same stay direct.
| Line | Value | How it is calculated |
|---|---|---|
| Room revenue per booking | 300 | Assumption: two nights at 150 |
| Agency commission rate | 15% | Assumption; check your contracts |
| Commission per agency booking | 45 | 300 × 15% |
| Payment and booking-engine cost per direct booking | 9 | Assumption: 3% of 300 |
| Break-even media cost per direct booking | 36 | 45 − 9 |
| Monthly media spend | 2,000 | Assumption |
| Incremental direct bookings needed | 56 | 2,000 ÷ 36, rounded up |
| Paid direct bookings needed if 30% would have booked direct anyway | 80 | 56 ÷ 0.7 |
Assumptions
- All figures are placeholders in one currency; use your own contracts and booking data.
- The alternative to a paid direct booking is the same stay booked through an agency, not a lost booking.
- Cancellations, member discounts and rate differences between channels are left out.
What we would test, in order
| Step | Measured by | Counts as success when |
|---|---|---|
| Connect the hotel to free booking links through Hotel Center or its booking engine’s connectivity partner, and add the IF-AD-CLICK or CAMPAIGN-ID parameter to the landing page. | Direct bookings from free booking links, counted in the booking engine. | Every Google click is tagged as paid or free within two weeks. |
| Write down the break-even cost per direct booking from the current agency contracts. | A break-even figure agreed by revenue and finance. | One figure per season, used to judge every paid test. |
| Run one paid channel, Performance Max for travel goals or Meta travel ads, for at least one full booking lead time. | Cost per incremental direct booking. | Keep the channel only while that cost stays below break-even. |
Before you pay for hotel ads
If any answer is no, fix it first.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the hotel’s own rate appear in Google’s free booking links? | It is the Google rate listing with no cost per click |
| Are free and paid clicks tagged separately? | Google Ads reports never include free booking link clicks |
| Does the booking engine send a Purchase event to Google and Meta? | Without it, campaigns optimise for searches or checkouts instead of bookings |
| Is there a written break-even cost per direct booking? | Without it, no paid result can be judged |
| For guests in the EEA, does the site qualify for the supplier unit? | It is a separate place on hotel searches for direct providers |
